Audition Information

Ages 2nd – 12th grade (2nd graders must have turned 7 by August 1 of their second grade year)
Choruses Five choir levels.  Placement is based on age and musical ability. (See below.)
Experience or other requirements
bullet 2nd – 5th graders - organized choral or music experience is not required.
bullet 6th and 7th graders - choral experience is helpful but not necessarily required.
bullet 8th graders and above - choral experience is necessary for success in our program.
bullet Boys with changed voices are welcome to audition for our Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass choir – Cappella.  Choral experience is necessary for success in this choir.
Audition procedure

What to expect at the audition:

bullet

Potential singers should be able to carry a tune with a pleasant, undamaged singing voice.

bullet

Sing several melodic patterns or scales as directed by the conductor.

bullet

Echo a rhythm pattern.

bullet

The director will ask questions to assess the singer’s music reading skills:

Reading music is not required for 2nd – 5th graders.

bullet

Some knowledge of music theory is helpful for 6th and 7th graders.

bullet

8th grade and above should have some music theory/sight-reading ability.

bullet

Each singer will be asked to sing the first verse of “America” ("My Country 'Tis of Thee").  Singers may use sheet music if they wish during the audition.

bullet

The audition process takes about 15 minutes.

What to bring:

A wallet-size photo of the singer, and

bullet

$10 audition fee.

Singers should wear appropriate attire:

Slacks or jeans in good condition and a collared shirt for boys (long pants: jeans in good condition or other appropriate pants) & top,

bullet

Skirt & top or a dress for girls no bare mid-drifts, halter tops, short-shorts or other suggestive clothing, and

bullet

Appropriate footwear.

Cantabile – Wednesday 4:30 – 6:00 (4th – 6th grade)

Cantoris – Tuesday & Thursday 4:30 – 6:00 (6th – 10th grade)

Cappella – Tuesday 6:30 – 8:30 (boys with changed voices and 11th & 12th grade girls)

Other commitments

We are a tuition-based choral education program. Our program is designed to be a September-May commitment. Half-year participation is subject to the approval of the Artistic Director.

Principals Lynn Stevens — Artistic Director of Cantus, Cantoris & Cappella
 
bullet Lynn Stevens, artistic director, conductor and co-founder of the Sacramento Children’s Chorus, has more than thirty years experience in teaching choral music to children. Ms. Stevens received a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from California State University, Sacramento. It was during her masters program that Ms. Stevens co-founded the Sacramento Children’s Chorus with Dr. Donald Kendrick, 18 years ago.

Julie Adams — Choir Director of Cantate & Cantabile

bullet Julie Adams, director of Cantate, is an accomplished conductor with a passion for using music to make a positive difference in our communities. Equally comfortable with classical and jazz styles, children and adults, Ms. Adams has conducted and performed with large choral ensembles, chamber choirs and jazz ensembles throughout her career. She received her Bachelor of Music in Choral/Vocal Music from California State University, Long Beach in 1985 and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from California State University, Sacramento in 1996.
Profile

Now in its 20th season, the Sacramento Children’s Chorus is the region’s premier youth choral ensemble, enjoying both critical recognition and broad audience acclaim. The singers, representing five counties in the area, perform a wide variety of modern and traditional works with numerous pieces reflecting languages and cultures from around the world.

SCC presents 2-3 seasonal concerts each year and has performed with the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, Sacramento Ballet, Sacramento Master Singers, Sacramento Opera and at the Sacramento Jazz Festival.  Other noteworthy civic performances have included:  National Anthem performances at the Sacramento River Cats & Sacramento Kings games; the memorial services of Congressman Robert Matsui and Mayor Joseph Serna, the inaugurations of Gov. Gray Davis and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, installation ceremony for Superior Court Judge Louis Mauro, State Firefighters annual memorial service, the opening of the legislative session, lighting of the state Christmas tree and the grand opening of the new Crocker Art Museum.  Our touring choir has traveled to Hawaii, Colorado, Norway & Sweden, Oregon, Canada, Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Czech Republic and Britain.  Twenty-eight singers from our advanced and SATB choirs traveled to China in the summer of 2013.
